Medical
Diego Garcia has limited medical facilities consisting of two clinics;
the Navy Medical Clinic and DG21 clinic. The DG21 clinic caters to all
contractors on the island and is staffed with two doctors, three nurses, two
medical technicians and one dentist. Treatment is free to DG21 personnel but
long-term medication is at the expense of the employee. Other contractors
pay for medication and treatment.
Navy clinic is fully equipped and supports all military and
Government employees on island and retired Tricare members
(Government and contractor) on a space available basis. The Navy
clinic will also take contractors as patients in an emergency.
Medical evacuation is by air and the medical evacuation point is
Singapore. DG21 uses the Mount Elisabeth Hospital (Singapore) Air
Ambulance Service that can take up to 24 hours to reach Diego Garcia
and conversely 24 hours to get back to Singapore. Medical evacuation
for DG21 employees is at the company’s expense but medical treatment
is the employee’s responsibility. DG21 strongly advises all DG21
employees to have medical insurance in place before coming to the
island. The company offers a subsidized medical plan.
Before leaving for Diego Garcia employees must undergo a medical
examination to determine minimum health requirements.
